What does “eco-retreat” mean?

Eco-retreats are committed to eco-friendly and sustainable practices, created to give guests a space for relaxation and encourage wellbeing, whilst preserving the natural environment. We see ourselves as custodians of this beautiful piece of land and we are governed by this mindset in everything we do at Leopard Valley.

What does “off-grid” mean?

Off-grid means we are self-sufficient, sustainable and not connected to any electricity, water or sewage infrastructure. This means we need to minimise our use of these resources. Our retreat is powered 100% by solar-generated energy thus we are not impacted by load-shedding. We ask that you not use high-consumption appliances such as hairdryers, air fryers or electric car chargers to preserve our power supply. Our water comes from a mountain spring so we ask that you are mindful of this when taking showers and washing up. We use sewage / septic tanks so please do not flush any foreign items (toilet paper only).

Wildlife at LVER

Our Valley is home to a range of wonderful wildlife, including leopards, baboons and snakes. We are committed to preserving the natural environment of the local wildlife and ensuring that we leave as little impact as possible on our surroundings. We advise caution when travelling with young children and pets, especially at night. When leaving your cabin or glamping unit, please close doors and windows, or zip up your tent and make sure no food is left out.

The legacy of the San people in our area

The original inhabitants of the Cederberg area were the San and Khoikhoi people. Rock art dating back over 2000 years has been found in the greater Cederberg & Pakhuys area. We have found 3 sites in the valley and as we set up our hiking trails we hope to find more. Why not try to find them?

Do you have hiking trails?

We are in the process of setting up trails in the surrounding mountains. Self-exploration of the mountains is encouraged. Please make sure you follow hiking safety guidelines, and most importantly; avoid hiking alone, take more water than you think you will need, wear sunscreen and a hat and please inform our Facilities Manager of your planned route.

Activities at LVER

We encourage you to truly unwind, disconnect from the stresses of the modern world, and reconnect: with yourself and with nature. Activities at Leopard Valley can include self-guided nature walks, a walk to our natural spring, lounging around the pool in summer or the hot tub in winter and visits to surrounding farms for guided tours. Alternatively, you can simply rest – which is what we recommend. We do provide a list of recommended activities in the surrounding area, which will involve some driving.

Nearest shops and restaurants

The nearest town is Citrusdal which is 32km away. There are shops to stock up on supplies, however, we do offer a fridge stocking service should you prefer to order your supplies ahead of time. Our accommodation is self-catering and we do not have a restaurant on site. There are restaurants on the Piekenierskloof Pass (35km away), in Citrusdal and Clanwilliam (40km). Please enquire for recommendations.

Accessibility: is a 4×4 required?

Our cabins are accessible without the use of a 4×4, however, our Facilities Manager can drive you to your cabin if you prefer. The same can be arranged for access to the glamping.

Swimming pools at glamping and cabins

There is a swimming pool at the cabin site and a natural rock pool at the glamping site.
